"Paradise Kiss"- Preview
Anime and manga in the US all too often gets grouped into at best a handful of categories, and at worst, two: shonen and shojo. As such, a lot of folks would say Paradise Kiss is a great shojo title. However, it's a bit misleading to say that. Not the great part, as Paradise Kiss is one of the best anime released this year in the US, but the shojo part. Those expecting Cardcaptor Sakura or Full Moon Wo Sagashite, or even something a little more subtle like Aishiteruze Baby or Kodocha are going to be disappointed. Paradise Kiss is a great josei title - a contemporary, witty drama about a high school romance set against a high-fashion backdrop, so little kids aren't at all going to be enamored of it, but that's fine as josei titles are aimed at teenage girls and young women, and for that audience it works wonderfully. In fact, if you're a teenager or a twenty-something who has ever experienced a crush - male or female - I'd be surprised if this anime title didn't resonate with you at least little.
Anime Matsui Launches
Sekai is a pretty, popular high school student. However, just as she is confessing her love to her childhood sweetheart, her whole world falls apart! The train she is on derails in a horrible accident, and only Sekai survives by being pulled through time by a strange little boy, with an even stranger doll with the ability to cross time and space. She finds herself hundreds of years in the past, tangled in the affairs of kings and martyrs, and being chased by a cruel man with the same face as the boy she loves.
Japanese Festival Celebrate Utah Heritage
THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE-Each fall, Utahns flock to Salt Lake City to celebrate Japanese culture. Sponsored by the Japanese Church of Christ, 268 W. 100 South, the annual Japanese Fall Festival serves as a reunion of sorts for church members and their neighbors and as a fundraiser. "It's always nice to have these festivals," said Al Kubuto, member of the Japanese Church of Christ. It "brings back our congregational members and their friends to the church to renew acquaintances." The festival dishes up a wide variety of entertainment options, including homemade Japanese food, dancing and proper kimono-wearing, martial arts and games and classes. Bernice Kida, who was one of the lead dancers at this year's festival, dressed the part in authentic Japanese attire. "This is the Michizure dance [I perform] - a stage dance to entertain people," Kida said. "My friend's instructor has to teach me the culture." A festival regular, Steven Major and his wife turned out for the yearly gala for a taste of cultural diversity. Luke Choi, the church's pastor and his wife, Jenis, shared violin and guitar-praise songs with everyone in attendance. "The Aki Matsuri [Japanese Fall Festival] is to support our Christian mission through the festival that celebrates our unique culture," Luke Choi said.
