Japanese Festival Celebrate Utah Heritage
THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE-Each fall, Utahns flock to Salt Lake City to celebrate Japanese culture. Sponsored by the Japanese Church of Christ, 268 W. 100 South, the annual Japanese Fall Festival serves as a reunion of sorts for church members and their neighbors and as a fundraiser. "It's always nice to have these festivals," said Al Kubuto, member of the Japanese Church of Christ. It "brings back our congregational members and their friends to the church to renew acquaintances." The festival dishes up a wide variety of entertainment options, including homemade Japanese food, dancing and proper kimono-wearing, martial arts and games and classes. Bernice Kida, who was one of the lead dancers at this year's festival, dressed the part in authentic Japanese attire. "This is the Michizure dance [I perform] - a stage dance to entertain people," Kida said. "My friend's instructor has to teach me the culture." A festival regular, Steven Major and his wife turned out for the yearly gala for a taste of cultural diversity. Luke Choi, the church's pastor and his wife, Jenis, shared violin and guitar-praise songs with everyone in attendance. "The Aki Matsuri [Japanese Fall Festival] is to support our Christian mission through the festival that celebrates our unique culture," Luke Choi said.
